INTRODUCING THE FELDENKRAIS METHOD®

Crafted over a 40-year period by scientist Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, this highly respected mind-body method delivers heightened awareness and greater freedom to your movement, thinking, sensing and feeling.  Its success rests on a simple but profound idea about human beings:

We can learn to move, and we can move in order to learn.

The Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education® is based on recent findings in neuroscience, biomechanics, and psychology. This unique system of exploratory movement sequences utilizes the power of the nervous system to improve and learn. It is distinguished by its quick and remarkable results, which are achieved without any strain or exertion. The method is practiced in two forms: Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) and Functional Integration® (FI).

An Awareness Through Movement lesson consists of verbally directed movement sequences.  This form, affectionately known as 'ATM', can be used with individuals or groups.  In Functional Integration, or 'FI' for short, your Feldenkrais practitioner guides you through the lesson primarily with gentle, non-invasive touch. Either type of lesson generally lasts between thirty to sixty minutes. Each lesson is organized around a particular 'function' or movement idea such as bending, reaching, sitting, swinging a golf club, walking, etc.   To learn more about the difference between ATM and FI,  visit our Frequently Asked Questions page, or better still, make your first appointment!  Some things must be experienced to be understood!   Learn more...

PRACTITIONERS

There are thousands of Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioners worldwide, creatively using the principles of the method in education, sports training, the performing arts, and the health field.  Each practitioner is required to complete 800 hours of accredited training, usually over a four-year period, and to participate regularly in professional development in order to maintain accreditation as a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner®.  Practitioners come from many walks of life:  physical and occupational therapy, dance, orthopedic medicine, communications, psychology, theater and vocal performance, massage therapy, gerontology, child development, and others.
